Weight Management (2) - Benefits of Losing Weight

Weight Management (2) - Benefits of Losing Weight

The other day I was thinking about the benefits of losing weight, and I realized that they mirror the many benefits of going plant-based with your eating. I thought it might be a good idea to make a list of some of the benefits of losing weight.... Motivational, to say the least.

Here's my list of weight loss benefits:

Health benefits of losing weight

The most obvious benefits are health based. I don't know about you, but when I start eating a healthy diet, I immediately feel better physically and emotionally. It's just such a positive change to take care of yourself. Beyond that initial boost, here are some of the health benefits people most often experience:

  • lowered blood pressure
  • lowered LDL cholesterol
  • lowered overall cholesterol
  • reversal of diabetes and lowered risk of diabetes
  • reversal of heart disease and/or lowered risk of heart disease
  • better mobility, such as walking longer distances without getting out of breath
  • less/no joint pain
  • decreased risk of stroke
  • improved sleep
  • possible reversal of sleep apnea
  • improvement in asthma and allergies (weight gain aggravates asthma and allergies)
  • lowered risk of cancer
  • reduction/elimination of some medications
  • more energy

Social/emotional benefits of losing weight

To varying degrees many overweight or obese people are socially and sometimes emotionally impeded and isolated by their weight. Lethargy sets in and it takes too much effort to leave home and join activities with friends and family. Here are some of the social and emotional benefits of losing weight:

  • increased energy
  • stress relief
  • increased enjoyment of exercise
  • when out with others, increased enjoyment of the activity rather than worrying about:
    • if you'll have enough stamina for the activity
    • if you'll fit in a chair at the restaurant or event
    • when you walk into a room, if everyone is looking at you because you're heavy
  • being able to participate in more active outings/sports events
  • increase positive thoughts - feeling good about yourself because you are doing somehihng good for your health and well-being
  • increased self confidence

Summary

My suggestion is to lose weight slowly as you establish a healthy eating plan for life. And... enjoy the return of energy, endurance, and zest for life.
