Be Kind - Be The Change - Be The Healthiest Version of Yourself

There are a certain number of vegans who have never eaten animal products. Growing up as children of vegans, eating a vegan diet comes naturally to them.

The rest of us, however, became vegans (or some form of vegan, vegetarian, plant eater, etc.) after some deliberation. When starting The Helpful Blogger, I wanted a slogan for it that would encompass the breadth of reasons people choose to alter their diets.

I tried out some of the common healthy food sayings, such as:

  • You are what you eat.
  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away. ~ British Adage
  • Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.  ~Hippocrates
  • To eat is a necessity but to eat intelligently is an art. ~LaRochefoucauld
  • You don't have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces -- just good food from fresh ingredients. ~ Julie Child

... But none of them seemed the right fit for the blog. Finally, I came up with be kind – be the change – be the healthiest version of yourself because it includes my thoughts on the three main reasons people change to a vegan or whole-food, plant-based diet.

be kind (to animals)

One of the main reasons many people stop eating animals and animal products is to be kind to animals. We often overlook that animals, chickens, and fish who are farmed for the meat/fish industry are often housed in spaces that are too small for any quality of life, and their lives are drastically shortened for the convenience of the food industry. Somehow our culture has accepted this and many of us (me included) gave this little thought for quite a while. Somehow, we disconnected our eating from the lives of the animals. Many of us reach an awakening to this issue at different times. So, I chose be kind as a good start for the slogan. Not only is this to signify being kind to the animals, but we should also be kind to ourselves and others. Changing life-long habits is a difficult process, and I believe it does not help to or judge ourselves or others along the way

be the change (about saving the environment)

Be the change is a slogan often used in conjunction with environmental issues. So, too, another common reason people change their diet to exclude animals and animal products is to help save the environment. It is well-documented that close to 40% of methane emissions come from farm factories. Also, harmful compounds are produced by farm factories, such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. These are known health hazards to humans in the vicinity.

be the healthiest version of yourself

One of the most frequent reasons people change to a vegan, vegetarian, or whole-food, plant-based diet is as a preventive health measure or to resolve/reverse chronic health issues. That's how I started on this journey. I was seeking a way to undo the damage of years of eating anything and everything that struck me as tasty. As I began reading, I became more and more hopeful that I could make a real difference to my health, energy, and longevity. You see, studies support that many chronic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, etc., are reversible through dietary changes.

So, be the healthiest version of yourself seemed the perfect mantra for all of us who want to improve our health and even do what we can to reverse detrimental health effects of these diseases.

There you have it... That's the origin of the slogan. I hope it'll give you some inspiration.

be kind - be the change

be the healthiest version of yourself
