Oh Yum: Strawberry Balsamic Breakfast Toast!
Breakfast toasts are so "in" right now it's kind of crazy. People are putting everything on toast, and why not? It's the perfect edible surface on which to experiment. For today's Oh Yum, we've made a tasty combination of sweet, tart, and savory.
In our opinion, every toast recipe needs some basic elements to make it properly mouth-watering:
- Something creamy
- Something crunchy
- Something zingy
Combine those three elements and you're on your way to creating a library of your own toasty adventures.
- 1/2 cup traditional hummus
- 1/2 cup fresh sliced strawberries
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
- 1/4 cup chopped pistachios
- 2 slices whole grain bread, toasted
In this case we created our creamy layer from hummus. You can buy it nearly every store these days, or if you're feeling more ambitious, however, you can make your own. We chose to use a mild, traditional hummus to let the rest of our ingredients take the spotlight.
On top of the hummus, we layered thinly sliced fresh strawberries. These give a delightful sweet tart pop, and contribute to a healthy diet with vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. Drizzle some of your favorite balsamic vinegar over top to add some bite, add a generous sprinkle crunchy, heart-healthy pistachios, and finish it off some fresh basil.
